about
My uncle Dave was a jovial and kind chap. He was often referred to as a gentleman. What most people didn’t know was that he had to contend with a serious mental illness for much of his adult life. Despite this, Uncle Dave had reached a point where he could manage the illness and live a normal life.
When the first lockdown hit the UK, the things in his life that helped Dave deal with his illness - a daily routine, regular meetings with family and friends - were gone. On April 2nd 2020 he took his own life. We miss him everyday.
Time has passed and we have had time to mourn our brother, uncle and dear friend. So, this post is not a request for sympathy, nor a rant against lockdowns; it's simply a reminder that our connections to people; our relationships with others are what make life worth living.
Last Christmas, so many people were apart from loved ones. The threat of further restrictions this year means it could be a reality again. With this in mind, I've written and recorded a Christmas song with a little help from my friends. It's called 'Don't Cancel Christmas Again'. The title speaks for itself. It carries a simple message - We need Christmas; it brings us together at the darkest time of year.
You can download the track today on Bandcamp for £2. All the money received through Bandcamp will be donated to Mind, a mental health charity that supported my uncle, and continues to support many others at their darkest and most difficult times.
I’d like to give a massive thank you to all of my talented friends for playing on the track and helping me put it together in such a short space of time. Really couldn’t have done it without you Dean Nickson, Jevon Turner, John Millar, Emma Howarth, Ste Harrison.
Happy Christmas everyone and all the best for 2022.
John
